Selamat Datang di Bali

A small island that holds an entire universe.

Bali is the kind of place that arranges itself around you. Mornings smell of frangipani and clove smoke. Afternoons belong to the surf and the shade. Evenings end on a cliff with the sun sinking into the Indian Ocean. Whether you came to disappear into Ubud's jungle, chase waves in Uluwatu, or trade business cards over arak in Seminyak — you'll find your version of the island.

Chapter One · The Island, Region by Region

Eight places, eight moods.

Bali isn't one destination — it's a constellation. Here's how to read the map.

Sunset at Canggu beach, Bali — surfers walking back from the waves.
01

Canggu

Surf · Cafés · Slow Mornings

The laid-back twin to Seminyak. Echo Beach and Batu Bolong for the surf, healthy cafés and co-working houses inland, and a rhythm that's distinctly Canggu — wetsuit by ten, espresso by eleven.

Our Canggu food list →
Padang Padang Beach near Uluwatu — turquoise surf meeting jungle-topped limestone cliffs and a hidden sandy cove.
02

Uluwatu

Cliffs · Surf · Sunset Temples

The southern tip of the island, where 70-metre cliffs drop into the surf and a sea-temple catches the last light of the day. Watch the Kecak fire dance, eat at a clifftop restaurant, then paddle out at one of the world's most famous breaks the next morning.

The Tegallalang rice terraces near Ubud, Bali — sculpted green steps climbing the valley.
03

Ubud

Jungle · Yoga · Rice Terraces

Bali's spiritual centre, wrapped in jungle and rice. Walk the Tegallalang terraces at dawn, sit with the macaques at the Sacred Monkey Forest, and finish the day at a yoga shala or one of the island's best spas.

Seminyak Beach at sunset with surfers silhouetted against the orange horizon.
04

Seminyak

Beach Clubs · Boutique · Nightlife

Bali's glamorous side. Boutique hotels, designer shopping and the beach clubs that shaped the island's reputation — Potato Head and Ku De Ta among them. Come for the long lunches, stay for the DJs.

Sunrise over Sanur Beach, Bali — calm waters and a wooden jukung outrigger boat.
05

Sanur

Sunrise · Family · Quiet Resorts

The classic, unhurried Bali. A long seaside promenade for walking or cycling, calm waters for the kids, and the best sunrise on the island. The natural launch pad for Nusa Lembongan day trips.

Manicured beach at St. Regis Nusa Dua, Bali — palm trees, sun loungers and turquoise water.
06

Nusa Dua

Five-Star · Honeymoon · Calm Seas

Manicured beaches and gated resorts — St. Regis, Grand Hyatt and their neighbours. The address for honeymooners, families and anyone who wants Bali on a five-star plate. Don't miss Geger Beach.

Kelingking Beach (T-Rex Bay) on Nusa Penida island — a curved bay shaped like a dinosaur head.
07

Nusa Penida

Adventure · Manta Rays · Hidden Beaches

A short boat ride from the mainland and a different planet on arrival. The island of Kelingking, Diamond Beach, Crystal Bay and the manta cleaning stations. Rent a scooter, leave at sunrise, come home with stories.

Sunset over Lovina Beach in northern Bali — black sand and a calm violet sky.
08

Lovina

Dolphins · Black Sand · Northern Calm

The other Bali. Black-sand beaches on the north coast, sunrise dolphin safaris (you can swim with them too), waterfalls and Buddhist monasteries inland. Quieter than the south — and that's the point.

The Tegallalang rice terraces in soft morning light — sculpted green slopes and palm trees.

In Focus · Tegallalang

Centuries of subak — Bali's water co-operatives — sculpted into a hillside.

The rice terraces above Ubud aren't a backdrop. They're a thousand-year-old engineering project: a network of irrigation channels, bamboo gates and farmer democracies that UNESCO recognised as a Cultural Landscape. Walk them at dawn, before the tour buses, when the mist still sits on the palms and the only sound is water moving down the steps.

Chapter Two · Where to Eat & Drink

Warungs, beach clubs & long Balinese tables.

From a €2 plate of nasi goreng at a roadside warung to a five-course tasting overlooking the surf — Bali eats well at every price.

A traditional Balinese spread on a wooden table — satay, sambal, rice and vegetables.

Balinese · Traditional

A proper nasi campur

The Balinese plate to know: a small mountain of rice ringed with satay, vegetables, peanuts, sambal and a hard-boiled egg. Different at every warung, never disappointing.

A plate of nasi goreng with prawn, fried egg and prawn crackers.

Street Food · Anywhere

Nasi goreng & a fried egg

Indonesia's national dish and the perfect €3 lunch. Smoky, sweet-soy fried rice with prawn or chicken, topped with a runny telur ceplok. Order it everywhere.

Nasi bebek goreng — crispy fried duck with rice and condiments — at a warung in Ubud.

Ubud · Local Specialty

Bebek goreng, the Ubud way

Crispy fried duck — marinated for hours in lemongrass, turmeric and galangal, then fried to a shatter. The classic Ubud dish after a morning in the rice fields.

Karsa Café in Bangkiang Sidem, Bali — open thatched seating overlooking rice fields.

Ubud Ridge · Café

Coffee in the rice fields

Karsa Café and its neighbours along the Campuhan Ridge. Walk in from Ubud, take a long table under the bamboo, and order an iced kopi susu with a view of the paddies.

Tip Tipping is not expected, but leaving 5–10 % at restaurants is appreciated when service is good. Carry small cash for warungs and street vendors.

Chapter Four · Plan Your Trip

The practical guide.

Visa, money, transport, health, etiquette — what you actually need to know before you land in Denpasar.

01

Arrival & Visa

Most nationalities — including the US, UK, EU, Australia and Russia — get a Visa on Arrival for around €35. Save time by applying for the e-VOA online before you fly.

  • Validity 30 days, extendable once
  • Need passport (6 mo+ valid), return ticket
  • Customs e-declaration via ecd.beacukai.go.id
02

Money & Cards

Bali runs on the Indonesian rupiah (IDR). Cards are accepted in restaurants, malls and tourist areas — but warungs and markets want cash.

  • ATMs BCA, Mandiri, CIMB Niaga — beside a bank
  • Limit ~IDR 1.5–3 M per withdrawal
  • Best card Wise or Revolut for FX rates
03

Transport

Traffic is chaotic — bring patience. Use Bluebird taxis or Gojek/Grab inside the cities. A scooter is the fastest way around the south, if you have a license and a helmet.

  • Airport → Seminyak ~€10–15
  • Airport → Ubud ~€20–27
  • Scooter rental €3–10 / day
04

Connectivity

A Telkomsel SIM is the gold standard for coverage. Buy at the airport on arrival or install an eSIM before you fly so you land online.

  • Plan 10–25 GB · IDR 150–250 K
  • Apps Gojek, Grab, Google Maps offline
  • Tip save a passport photo on your phone
05

Health & Safety

Bali is generally safe, but a few tropical rules pay off: bottled water, real sunscreen, insect repellent at dusk, and travel insurance — especially if you're renting a bike.

  • Police 112
  • Ambulance 118
  • Hospital BIMC (private), Sanglah (public)
06

Etiquette

Dress modestly at temples — sarongs are usually provided. Don't step on the small palm-leaf offerings (canang sari) on the pavement. Use your right hand to give and receive.

  • Halo hello
  • Terima kasih thank you
  • Berapa? how much?

Interlude · Wellness & Sport

The island's sport and sauna rhythm.

Bali looks after the body — surf in the morning, padel in the afternoon, sauna before dinner. These are the places the local community actually uses.

01 · Part One

Gyms & saunas

Top-tier gyms that are closer to clubs than training rooms — saunas, cold plunges, cafés, working desks.

02 · Part Two

Padel clubs

Padel is Bali's fastest-growing sport this year. Find open matches on the Playtomic app — install it and set up a profile before you arrive.

03 · Part Three

Surf with an instructor

Your first wave is much less scary when someone who reads the line-up is in the water with you.

One app before you fly

Download Grab.

Grab is Southeast Asia's Uber, Bolt and Wolt in one — taxis, scooter rides, food delivery, parcels, pharmacy and groceries. In Bali's tourist zones it's the local operating system: most taxis, the majority of food-delivering restaurants, and even some warungs are on it. Install before you fly, add your bank card, prices are shown in IDR up-front — no haggling.

  • Pay by card Add Wise, Revolut or any bank card. You only need cash for small warungs and the market.
  • Set price up-front Book a ride, see the final IDR fare before confirming. Bali's taxi haggling is switched off inside Grab.
  • GrabCar vs GrabBike The car is comfier; the scooter cuts through traffic twice as fast at a third of the price. Both live in one app.
  • GrabFood 24/7 Food to your door — thousands of warungs and restaurants, late nights included. After surf you don't have to leave.
  • GrabExpress + GrabMart Send a parcel across the island in under an hour; order groceries from a supermarket like an Asian Wolt Market.

Selamat Jalan

Pack light. Embrace the chaos. Stay a little longer.
